Yum! Brands highlights progress on climate, sustainable packaging, and equity and inclusion priorities in its annual Citizenship and Sustainability Report

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky, July 20, 2022 /CSRwire/ — Today, yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE: YUM) has released its annual Global Citizenship and Sustainability Report, highlighting the company’s strategic investments in socially responsible growth, risk management and stewardship of its people, food and of its impact on the planet. This includes fighting climate change, advancing sustainable packaging, and creating equity in the communities it serves.

Yum!’s accomplishments include announcing Science-Based Targets (SBTs) and launching key programs targeting reductions across its restaurants and supply chain, releasing a harmonized packaging policy for its four brands and an education and research center to unlock franchising opportunities for people of color and underrepresented women.

The report reflects key initiatives and areas of work announced since Yum! Brands released its latest report in 2021, showcasing progress against its existing public commitments and covering the company’s ESG strategy. Due to the company’s continued progress and transparent disclosure, Yum! was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index North America for the fifth consecutive year and is listed on Newsweek’s list of America’s Most Responsible Companies for 2021.

Highlights from the new Global Citizenship and Sustainability Report from Yum! include:

People

  • Awarded more than $50 million in funding to nearly 30 social impact programs in nine countries through Yum!’s global Unlocking Opportunity initiative, a five-year, $100 million commitment to fight inequalities through equity and inclusion, education and entrepreneurship for employees, frontline teams and restaurant communities around the world
  • In 2022, launched the Yum! Franchise Accelerator, a one-of-a-kind elective MBA opportunity supporting underrepresented people of color and women interested in the franchise restaurant industry, as part of the Yum! Franchise Center for Excellence, which was established in 2021
  • Continued drive to achieve gender parity in leadership positions by 2030, in line with Paradigm for Parity®, with 42% of global leadership positions held by women in 2021

Food

  • Conducted over 578,400 restaurant food safety audits since 2016
  • Continued to introduce relevant and distinctive plant-based offerings through partnership with Beyond Meat
  • Commitment to transition to 100% cage-free eggs in at least 25,000 restaurants by 2026, including in the US, Western Europe and other markets, across all brands for all dishes and menu ingredients
  • Launched a new chicken welfare platform at KFC Global to further strengthen its animal welfare practices around poultry, with the US market releasing a report sharing its progress against key 2021 welfare indicators
  • Made progress on Taco Bell’s goal to reduce antibiotics of importance to human health in its beef supply chain in the United States and Canada by releasing a beef policy and noting that approximately 15% of its raw beef supply comes from reduced antibiotic sources

Planet

  • Announced SBTs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by almost 50% by 2030 and set the ambition to achieve net zero emissions by 2050
  • Building on Yum!’s SBTs, joined Supplier Leadership on Climate Transition, an emissions reduction training program for beef, poultry and dairy suppliers in the US and Canada
  • Entered into a two-year partnership between KFC UK & Ireland and the University of Liverpool’s Zero Carbon Research Institute (ZCRI) in which ZCRI researchers are examining KFC UK & Ireland restaurants to identify ways to become a net zero business by 2040 and a circular, zero waste company in food, packaging and materials by 2035
  • Committed to making all consumer plastic packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025 across all brands as part of the new harmonized packaging policy
