Wendy’s has just under 7,000 restaurants worldwide, but had already struggled to gain a foothold in the UK.
The chain made a previous attempt to break into the UK restaurant market in the 1990s, but closed its last chain in 1999 after losing to competitors like McDonalds and Burger King.
Over 20 years later, Wendy’s returned to the UK and opened its first location in Reading earlier this year.
Four more locations followed in Stratford, Oxford, Croydon and Romford, while five delivery restaurants also opened this year.
Sales at current UK restaurants have exceeded expectations, prompting Wendy’s to rapidly ramp up its expansion plans in the UK.
The Brighton restaurant – which is the only confirmed named location on the list – will be among the 50 slated to open in 2022.
Wendy’s has confirmed that there will also be new branches in the Midlands, as well as in each home country.
They will open company-owned restaurants and open franchises in some branches.
Abigail Pringle, President, International and Chief Development Officer of Wendy’s, said: âWe have set ourselves a target to enter the UK this year with five restaurants owned and operated by the company, and we have delivered on their promises.
âWe also welcomed our first franchisee, REEF, who has opened five delivery kitchens to date. We have had incredible success that has exceeded our expectations, and it is clear to us that customers love our fresh, high quality food. Now it’s time to step on the accelerator to bring more Wendy’s to more UK customers across the country.
Wendy’s plans to serve its famous square burgers to customers through a variety of channels, including traditional restaurants, drive-thru and delivery kitchens, providing customers with better access to Baconator, Dave’s Single and Spicy Chicken Sandwich.
Paul Hilder, senior vice president and general manager of Wendy’s for the UK and Canada, said: âWe have built a solid foundation and are confident in our plans to expand across the country over the past 18-24. next months.
âWe are in the final stages of discussions with two traditional franchise partners who will help the brand cross the Midlands and the North of England, and we have a very strong pipeline of franchise applicants beyond that. “
