There was a time when some thought In-N-Out Burger was coming to New York

We were told we would never have an In-N-Out Burger restaurant here in New York, or anywhere in the eastern United States for that matter. However, only one In-N-Out burger found its way onto the streets of New York in 2019.

In-N-Out is coming to New York?

Had the popular chain changed its mind and suddenly decided to expand to the east coast? The internet began to speculate that it might have been some kind of marketing for a new location that was to open in New York. The mysterious uneaten burger, believed to be in “immaculate condition”, was found lying on the street in Queens. Was it part of a TV shoot, or some kind of artistic decoration?

At the time, no one knew how he got there.

The story

An Instagram user stumbled upon the burger which seemed to be chilling on its own and shared a photo of the lonely beef patty on social media. The folks at In-N-Out were also confused about all the attention. They said they had no idea how any of their cooked burgers found their way to New York, given that their closest restaurants were in Texas.

The company’s vice president of operations said in a statement that he was “surprised” to hear about the ghost burger:

Because our burgers are only cooked fresh in six states, it took considerable planning to get this burger to make the trip from the grill to the Empire State.

So what really happened?

Well, it turns out that story wasn’t so spectacular after all.

After sharing his photo of the burger, the Instagram user told Vice he was contacted by a 16-year-old high school student from Flushing, who said she bought his order in Encinitas, California. She had then taken a JetBlue flight across the country to return to JFK airport. She went on to say that she kept the burgers she ordered in a bag, but the bag opened and tipped over when she sprinted to catch a bus.

The NY Post says she even posted a screenshot of the In-N-Out restaurant she visited in California, her order receipt and even her flight information as proof.

There were no In-N-Outs in New York. Basically, someone just knocked this fucking burger down the street.

In-N-Out is known as a California restaurant chain, with locations also in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Texas and Idaho. they currently have 358 locations nationwide.
