The Taco Bell menu says goodbye to Mexican pizza (again)

Taco Bell removed Mexican pizza from its menu in 2020 at the height of the covid pandemic. At the time, the chain decided to simplify its menu because a much higher percentage of orders were delivery and takeout. Mexican Pizza was not selected, but it is quite possible that the Yum! Brands (YUM) – Get yum! Report Brands, Inc. The chain knew it would get a wave of publicity by removing the fan-favorite item from its menu.

It’s very likely that the Mexican chain pulled Mexican Pizza as it would cause fans of the menu item to lobby for its return. Taco Bell no longer sells Mexican pizza

The return of Mexican pizza was something of a cultural event – like when people lined up for Restaurant Brands International’s (RSQ) – Get Restaurant Brands International Inc report Popeye’s Chicken Sandwich or Starbucks Frenzy (SBUX) – Get the Starbucks Corporation report created when the Unicorn Frappuccino was launched. This led Taco Bell to sell the recently returned favorite. The bad news is that it won’t be coming back anytime soon, according to a letter to employees posted on social media.

“Due to the incredible love for Mexican pizza, we have started selling across the country. We will communicate this to our fans later this week. Mexican pizza will return later this year; that date is approaching,” the channel shared in internal communication.

Taco Bell also shared vague details about the possible return of Mexican pizza on its website.

“We are working diligently with our restaurants and suppliers to put more into the hands and stomachs of our biggest fans. You can follow this page for the latest details and information, including when we expect Mexican pizza to return. to his permanent home on the Taco Bell menu,” the channel posted.

Taco Bell has also delayed the planned Mexican pizza musical which was written by Dolly Parton. The musical’s online debut was scheduled for May 26.

“The show will continue, but not on May 26. Having the chance to create a musical about the countless fans who helped bring back Mexican pizza is a story worth telling – so stay tuned for more information on when you can expect to see Mexican Pizza The Musical, with the joy and party spirit in which it was originally created,” the company added.

What is Taco Bell Mexican Pizza?

Mexican pizza is basically a flat, crispy taco, with a few flourishes. First, it uses a flour-based crispy shell (rather than a corn-based shell) topped with beans, pizza sauce, seasoned beef, tomatoes, and a melted blend of three cheeses. You can add sour cream, nacho cheese sauce, or guacamole, among others.

Taco Bell also has an added vegetarian version of the menu item.

“Vegetarian lovers have been some of the loudest and most optimistic for the return of Mexican pizza, as Taco Bell has been a paradise for vegetarians thanks to the ability to customize…and is available vegetarian without seasoned beef,” shared the company in a press release.

The chain noted that it doesn’t have a separate prep area for the vegetarian version of the Mexican pizza.
