The McRib is making its annual return to stores for a limited time, starting November 1.

One of America’s favorite seasonal sandwiches is celebrating a big birthday this year. The McRib will celebrate 40 years of boneless pork goodness when it arrives at McDonald’s next month. First introduced in 1981, the Boneless Pork Sandwich features a patty-shaped rack of ribs topped with barbecue sauce. The galette is topped with pickles and slices of raw onion and served on an oval bun. It remained on the menu until 1985, when executives felt the sandwich was not selling well enough.

The McRib has been introduced for limited runs over the years, with McDonald’s hosting several farewell tours for the sandwich (obviously, that was never really a farewell). Since 2010, it has reappeared every year, usually for 4-6 weeks in November and December. In the 2000s, fans came to describe his comeback as “McRib Season.”

The leaders decided that bringing the sandwich back in the fall gave people the chance to savor a food that is typically eaten in the spring and summer.

“In the 1980s, the brains behind McDonald’s food innovation came up with a truly unique idea: an undeniably delicious sandwich that could be enjoyed in the colder seasons,” said Mike Bullington, senior director of archives at McDonald’s. “Whether you’re a McRib devotee or a newbie, there’s no denying that McRib is one of the most iconic sandwiches of the past four decades and we’ve got thousands of fan emails and tweets to prove it. “

There is one place you can get a McRib 365 days a year: Germany. But if you’re not ready to travel to Europe when you have a craving, set a reminder to go to the nearest McDonald’s in November. If you haven’t already, download the McDonald’s app and join the new MyMcDonald’s rewards program. For each purchase, you will have access to daily specials. Last year, “Buy One, Get One Free” offers were available in the app for the iconic sandwich. Hope the offers are as good or better this year!

Will you be lining up for the McRib on November 1? Share your love for this annual sandwich in the comments.
