McDonald’s launches new Australian drink Australiano to compete with American Americano

The fast food giant has launched a new Aussies-only drink to rival a classic American menu item. Do you want to try?

McDonald’s has announced the launch of a new menu item exclusively for Australians – and some of us will be able to try it for free.

The fast-food giant has tapped into our love of coffee, creating a new drink dubbed “the Australiano” that adds a combination of native acacia seed and chai flavors to McCafe’s locally roasted coffee beans.

It was deliberately designed to rival the classic Americano, with McDonald’s Australia telling news.com.au the drink took over a year to prepare.

“The goal here for us is to create a flavor of coffee that Australians can call their own,” said Lancy Huynh, Group Brand Manager for McDonald’s Australia.

“We can’t wait to hear what our customers think of this unique blend of flavors.”

Available for a limited time from May 25 at McCafé’s across the country, the Australiano has been described by Macca’s as a “coffee lover’s treat” that can be served hot or iced.

“Australia is a nation of coffee lovers. What better way to celebrate them than to create a cafe they can call their own? Lancey added.

“As a champion of Australian coffee culture, McCafé wanted to right that wrong and create a blend that Australians can proudly put their name to.

“Our expert baristas looked no further than our own backyard for a defining Australian ingredient – the native acacia seed – to create a deliciously unique coffee.

“Wattleseed was selected because of its flavor profile which complimented McCafé’s locally roasted coffee beans”

Lancy went on to say the new brew, which costs $4.75 but prices may vary, was a coffee Australians “can proudly put their name to”.

McCafé is considered a “true Australian success story” by the brand, having first launched in the back streets of Melbourne in 1993.

It now serves more than 300 million barista-made cups of coffee and hot drinks a year and one in four cups of coffee sold in Australia every day comes from a McCafé.

Coffee lovers can try the Australiano for free when McCafé hits the road later this month on a 2,000km journey from Melbourne to the east coast of the Sunshine State to celebrate the milestone.

There will be eight stops on the journey where coffee will be offered, two at VIC, two at NSW and four at QLD (see below for details).

The fast food franchise seems to be celebrating all things Australia right now, recently announcing a new “Famous Orders” collaboration with Aussie rapper The Kid Laroi.

Customers will be able to buy Sydney’s must-have Macca order from May 26 – which includes the iconic cheeseburger, medium fries, medium frozen Coke and six-piece chicken McNuggets with barbecue sauce.

Controversially, the rapper opted to ditch the pickle in his cheeseburger.
