McDonald’s college opportunity | Eyewitness News

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE / WYOU) – A local fast food franchise provides happy meals and educational opportunities for its staff.

“I qualify for whatever they ask for and being able to go to college completely for free is just great thinking about it,” said Ian Richmond, a high school student and McDonald’s employee.

Richmond works in one of the 16 McDonald’s from the Mueller family locations in northeast and central Pennsylvania. With a new employee benefit, the high school student will graduate from Lackawanna College debt-free.

“We are super excited! We were able to partner with Lackawanna College to provide our employees with an accessible option to pursue their educational dreams, ”said Christina Mueller-Curran, owner / operator of McDonald’s.

Mueller-Curran has partnered with Lackawanna College to make this opportunity possible. It is offered to all franchise employees who work a minimum of 16 hours per week.

After 90 days of work, they can enroll in courses and start preparing for a bachelor’s or associate’s degree. Efforts are aimed at attracting more staff and helping them achieve their educational goals.

“We have talked a lot about the problem of the incredible manpower shortage as well as the problem of university debt and the fact that students and families are absorbing this university debt is so often intimidating and we kind of thought about it. together and came up with the idea that we can try to solve these two problems on a small scale, ”said Jill A. Murray, President and Director of Innovation at Lackawanna College.

Richmond can’t wait to become an accountant. Her mom and coworker Denise says she couldn’t be happier.

“It’s a great relief for all of us. Him as you know a student, we as parents, and I think what will happen with other parents and children if they come to work here, just this thought of being tuition free and not getting into debt and getting an education is just something that doesn’t come up often at all, ”Denise said.

This opportunity is only available at the 16 McDonald’s locations of the Mueller family in Scranton, Clarks Summit, Dickson City, Old Forge, Wilkes-Barre, Shavertown, Wyoming, Mountain Top, Carbondale, Tunkannock, Eynon, Honesdale, Allentown and Bethlehem .
