McDonald’s China celebrates 31st anniversary with an NFT

In an interesting turn of events, Chinese McDonald’s is releasing its first-ever NFT despite China’s difficult relationship with the crypto industry. Crypto activity is still not exactly at stake in the country, but McDonald’s is presenting its first non-fungible token (NFT).

The NFT is known as “Big Mac Rubik’s Cube”. This launch commemorates McDonald’s 31st anniversary. Specifically, it marks the 31st year of the brand’s presence in the mainland Chinese market.

In addition, the launch of NFT also marks the official opening of the new McDonald’s headquarters on the West Bank of Shanghai. McDonald’s China CEO Zhang Jiayin says the brand is “young and trendy.” It is the one who pays attention to advanced technology as well as fashion trends.

Jiayin expresses his approval that McDonald’s is the first national restaurant to launch an NFT. He also praises the new headquarters, saying it is a whole new development for the franchise in China. As he highlights the two milestones, he adds:

“At this special moment, we are using the form of NFT to share McDonald’s innovation, digitization and trending art with employees and consumers.”

Speaking of which, the “Big Mac Rubik’s Cube” is a 3D token. In fact, it takes inspiration from the infrastructure and design of the new head office building with a dash of “Spirit of McDonald’s”. This means that the cube comes with a yellow, red, and orange color scheme.

Additionally, McDonald’s China said it will distribute 188 of these Cube tokens to its consumers and employees. Truly a fascinating notion of the brand. However, this is not the first F&B restaurant to launch its own NFT.

Just a few weeks ago, Burger King announced their NFT promotion deal. The brand has partnered with Sweet to launch a gamified promotion with the presence of NFT. The promotion is called “Burger King Keep is Real Meal”. Likewise, Taco Bell also made its NFT debut recently. To clarify, he posted some taco-themed images and GIFs to Rarible.
