MASON, Michigan – A federal lawsuit alleges that a manager at Cedar Street McDonald’s restaurant in Mason sexually harassed nearly 100 women and girls, sometimes fiddling with or offering to have sex over a four-year period as officials the company did nothing.
Now a federal judge rules the lawsuit can go ahead as a class action suit. The lawsuit was originally filed in 2019 and amended this summer.
“His harassment was heard by all and seen by all. You didn’t have to be next to him to endure his abuse. You could be in another part of the restaurant and still be subjected to a torrent of conversation, touching or sexual abuse directed at other people, ”said Gillian Thomas, lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union.
One of the victims said she was forced to have sex with the manager in exchange for more hours on the schedule.
Another claims the manager put his penis in her hand as they worked next to each other.
Many women complained to senior management, but despite this the director worked there for four years.
Thomas says Wednesday’s decision is a victory for victims as many come from disadvantaged backgrounds
“These are among the most vulnerable workers for a variety of reasons. They tend to be younger and have less formal education about their rights. They may have more precarious economic circumstances because they earn minimum wage, ”Thomas said.
Today’s ruling means that the class action lawsuit against the owner of the franchise, MLMLM, can go ahead.
Thomas said a conference at the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan is scheduled for Jan.31. A trial date will be set at that time.
McDonald’s did not respond to a message left seeking comment.
