Gundam and McDonald’s team up for a special Burger menu

The world of Gundam has explored some weird territory in the past, but the upcoming partnership with McDonald’s should see one of the franchise’s weirdest releases yet, as Gundam the burgers are expected to arrive in Japan later this month. Using the original villain from the first Mobile Suit: Gundam series, Char, to help promote the edibles and lead the charge as the hype for the partnership, the syndicate released a trailer with the first look at various products slated to arrive this summer.

2022 is set to be a big year for the Gundam franchise, not just thanks to this partnership with McDonald’s, but with a new movie coming this summer that will tell the story of the legendary “lost episode” of the original series titled Mobile Suit Gundam Cucuruz Doan’s Island. In addition to this new movie, the franchise is also introducing a new anime series that will feature the mech franchise’s first female protagonist known as Gundam: Witch of Mercurywhich should arrive this fall.

The official McDonald’s Japan Twitter account has shared new details about Gundam burgers and other food items set to arrive in the East later this month, along with the infamous Char, the original season one villain, helping to sell these robot-themed edibles. :

The partnership has also produced a new commercial which sees Char help spread the news of this strange union between Mobile Suit Gundam and McDonald’s:

On the flip side of this promotion, Gundam fans were disheartened when they learned last year that the majority of Gundam cafes would be closing in Japan, with those establishments mixing restaurants with certain aspects of the series. While Japan’s Walking Gundam remains a major tentpole for the series, with the statue able to take action on its own, it’s currently down for repairs for the summer. Every franchise has bumps along the way, but Mobile Suit: Gundam clearly succeeds in creating some wild wares along the way.

Would you like to see Gundam burgers come to North America? What other anime franchises deserve their own burgers? Feel free to let us know in the comments or hit me up directly on Twitter @EVComedy to talk all things comics, anime, and the world of mech suits.
