The outline of the first Byrne Dairy convenience store in Broome County appeared on the site of an abandoned Friendly’s restaurant.
Excavation work began Monday morning at the intersection of Main Street East and Loder Avenue.
Most residents of Endicott remember the old building on the site from the decades it served as a Friendly Restaurant. But the place opened as a Sambo restaurant in 1977.
The name has been changed due to its alleged racist nature. It became No Place Like Sam’s before being renamed Season’s restaurant.
It operated as a Friendly restaurant for a few decades until it closed without notice in April 2019.
Construction work on the site of the new Byrne Dairy is taking place just north of the empty restaurant building.
Demolition work on the old structure is expected to start in a few days.
Endicott Mayor Linda Jackson said she believes the Byrne Dairy store will open next spring.
