Novelist Nora Ephron once joked, “Everybody loves fried chicken.” Never get there. Already. Buy it from a place that does good fried chicken.
But which restaurant makes the best fried chicken? A new data report on the major fried chicken restaurant chains in the United States reveals that American public opinion is divided on the subject.
The winner is: Market research agency TOP Data compiled the number of customers from major industry chains in the continental United States (sorry, Alaska and Hawaii) and found that the private company Chick-fil-A as the most popular destination in 22 states, with Yum! Brands Inc. YUM KFC as the first choice in 11 states.
Chick-fil-A’s popularity was strong in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern states and much of the West Coast states, while KFC split New England with Chick-fil-A and dominated in the northern Great Plains states.
Other strings that resonated in the survey were Raise the canewhich placed first in nine states, and Church Chickenwhich was ranked highest in three states. Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc.a division of Restaurant Brands Inc. RSQwas the most popular fried chicken outpost only in Washington state, while Bojangles was the local favorite for Kentucky and At Zaxby’s reigned in Oklahoma.

Popeyes will offer a five-piece deal for $6.99 on National Fried Chicken Day while white castle will offer a BOGO promotion for its Crispy Chicken Slider, Chicken Ring Slider, or Chicken and Waffle Slider. Cracker Barrel will allow customers who order the Southern Fried Chicken family lunch box to receive a free family side dish of baked beans with bacon.
And National Fried Chicken Day festivities aren’t unique to the U.S. The Canadian Mary Brown’s Chicken chain offering its Chicken & Taters two-piece special for just CA$4.99 plus tax, while Korean cuisine Chicken Gami & Beer chain in Australia will give away 40,000 chicken wings for National Fried Chicken Day.
But wherever the meal is eaten, maybe a celebrity chef Paula Deen said it best: “I think no matter the occasion, you can never go wrong showing up to the dinner table with a hot plate of fried chicken.”
